Texas Used Car Sales Tax And Fees, Explained

Triple J Auto Investment · Updated

The short answer

When you buy a used car in Texas you pay 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax on the price minus any trade-in, a title fee ($33 in Harris County), and registration, which starts at a $50.75 base fee for cars and light trucks plus county fees. On an $8,000 car with no trade-in, the sales tax is $500.

Sales tax: 6.25%

The Texas Comptroller puts it in one line: 6.25 percent of the sales price, minus any trade-in allowance. So a trade-in lowers your tax. When you buy from a dealer, the dealer collects it.

Example: a $9,000 car with a $1,000 trade-in is taxed on $8,000, so the tax is $500.

Title and registration

The title fee is $33 in Harris County. Registration starts at a $50.75 base fee for cars and lighter pickups, or $54 for vehicles from 6,001 to 10,000 pounds, and your county adds local fees on top.

Inspection

Since January 1, 2025, most personal cars in Texas no longer need a yearly safety inspection. A $7.50 inspection program replacement fee is charged with registration instead. Harris County still requires a passing emissions test before registration.
